Lessons

Two of the most sought after music instructors in the Metro Detroit Michigan area, both Steven and Abha teach a practical approach to music making based on the disciplines of classical music. We have recently relocated to Farmington Hills, on the border of Novi and Livonia at Drake and Nine Mile. Private music lessons may be arranged with Abha (voice/flute) or Steven (classical/Spanish/ guitar).

Steven Dearing has been teaching guitar since 1992 in the Southeast Michigan and Southern Ontario region. In Canada, Steven studied with Jeffrey McFadden (U. of Toronto), Dominic Bertucci (U. of Windsor), and William Beauvais (Royal Conservatory of Music). In the US, he studied with John Holmquist (Cleveland Institute of Music) and Michael Stockdale (Center for Creative Studies). Steven has performed in master classes with several international artists including David Russell, Fabio Zanon, Ricardo Cobo and Manuel Barreuco. He holds a Masters degree in Guitar Performance and has been on faculty at the University of Windsor since 1995. Seven of his students have been awarded silver medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music for achieving the highest marks in Ontario on their RCM exams, and many of his current and former pupils are now teaching at Detroit/Windsor music schools and performing throughout metro Detroit.

Abha Dearing has been teaching flute and voice privately for 14 years. Her training includes the following: Bachelor of Music Education from Wayne State University, studies in Indian Classical Music at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, private flute lessons with Detroit Symphony members Clem Barone, Jeff Zook, and Ervin Monroe, and private voice lessons with Laxmi Shankar and Janice Albright (under whom she is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Voice Performance at Oakland University). Currently Abha is the music director at Mercy High School, and she is the choir director at Birmingham Unitarian Church. Many of Abha's student have won various scholarships and awards including First Division ratings at Michigan's District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, the Verdi Opera Competition, and the Farmington Musicale Scholarship Competition.

Michigan classical guitarist Steven Dearing is now accepting classical guitar students for private lessons in the metro Detroit area, Southeast Michigan and Southern Ontario. He holds a masters of music degree and is an affiliate of the Royal Conservatory of music. Students may perfom at monthly studio classes. During lessons students often discuss rudimentary theory and ear training used in college preparation. Steven performs locally, tours internationally and has recorded three critically acclaimed CD's. He currently teaches at the University of Windsor and at his studio/home.
